Optimize your resume: Your resume determines in the first few seconds whether your application will be read further. Recruiters often spend less than a minute per document. That's why it's so important that your resume immediately highlights the essentials.
The correct setup
A modern CV is structured in reverse chronological order. This means: The most recent position is at the top, followed by a reverse chronological list of your career history. The classic order looks like this:
Personal data, professional experience, education, further training, knowledge and skills, voluntary work or interests (if applicable).
You should be able to manage on two pages. Those just starting out can usually manage on one.
What Berlin employers particularly value
Berlin has a diverse job market. Language skills are often a real advantage here, especially in service industries, healthcare, and IT. List them specifically and use a clear classification such as fluent, good knowledge, or basic knowledge.
Flexibility is also important. If you are willing to work in different districts or do shift work, that's worth mentioning.
The most common mistakes
Long, continuous paragraphs don't belong in a CV. Use short bullet points that show what you've done and achieved. Instead of "Responsible for customer service," write something like "Supported approximately 40 existing customers, increasing satisfaction through a dedicated contact person system.".
Another classic issue is unexplained gaps. A break in your resume isn't a problem as long as it's explained. Parental leave, caring for relatives, time off for health reasons, or a career change are all legitimate reasons.
The application photo
A photo is not mandatory in Germany, but it is still often expected. If you do use one, make sure it's a professional one. A cell phone photo in front of the living room wall does more harm than good.
